Cub Scout Pack 72

Committee Chair Dave Welcomes You To the Pack 72 Website!

I would like to take a moment to tell you about the oldest pack in Zephyrhills, FL.

Pack 72 has received the Journey to Excellence Gold Award for the 2011/2012 and the 2012/2013 seasons along with earning the Silver Journey To Excellent Award in 2013/2014 simply because our leaders understand that scouting is more than a hour a week and a hour a month.  Our pack has a big impact in our local communities as we participate in several service projects throughout the year; for example the Great American Clean Up, Cemetery clean ups and restorations, Scouting for Food Drives (over the past four years our pack has raised more than 7,000lbs of food for our area hungry), our webelos in 2014 collected food and raised 400.00 to help with the Zephyrhills Chapter of Meals on Wheels, Toys for Tots, Stuff the Bus Campaign, Park Clean ups, Adopt A Road Members.  We also were honored to kick off the 2012 Zephyrhill's Mayoral Debate with the Presenting of Colors.  With the help of Boy Scout Troop 72 we presented the colors at the 2011 9/11 Memorial Service in Zephyr Park.  Our pack has also joined forces with Chester Taylor Elementary to help with projects around the school to make kids' school experience the best it can be.  Our pack also partnered with Marion Smith Florist this year to help with the "Make Someone Smile" Campaign where our scouts worked an entire week making and delivering more than 250 flower bouquets and helped to distribute more than 100 stuffed animals to area nursing homes.  Many smiles were made that week!!!  We also have adopted the West Winds Assisted Living Facility where our boys have the chance to visit the residents on major holidays and we are honored to hear the residents' stories and to spend quality time with the people.  Our pack in 2012 partnered with New Walk Church's Amped teens by washing cars to help raise $500. to go towards the goal of being able to package and feed more than 10,000 children both here at home and in the Dominican Republic.  Our pack also partnered with Just Church and other bay area churches as we helped with their first annual Harvest Festival which was held in Zephyr Park.  Our pack has also helped with the preparation and serving of meals for more than 350 homeless people as we partnered with the Love One Another Ministry in Dade City.  We also helped with the Walk N' Wag event which kicked off its first event in 2014 to help raise money to purchase food for homeless people's pets.  These are just a few of the many, many ways that we teach our scouts the importance of showing God's love to our community and to our neighbors.  We are always seeking ways to give back to our communities so that our communities can be places that we can be proud to call home.

Our Pack also received the 2011/2012 National Summertime Award for our outstanding summertime activities that take place during the months of June, July and August.  You definitely won't want to missout on these activities.  Our pack has also earned this award for the 2012/2013 and the 2013/2014 seasons as well.

Our Scouts earned some very prestigious awards on September 26, 2012 for their efforts in making our community a better place to call home.  They received the Presidential Volunteer Award which comes down from the President of the United States, Mr. Barrack Obama.  The boys also received letters of congratulations from Florida Governor Rick Scott and Florida State Senator Ronda Storms for their services to our local communities.  The boys were also greeted with letters of congratulations from Will Weatherford's office.  Will Weatherford is the Speaker of the House.  He issued letters congratulating the boys on their advancements in rank.  Our boys are invited to attend an upcoming City Council Meeting in Zephyrhills, where the mayor will present our pack with a city proclamation for a job well done.  Our Pack will be presented on September 25, 2013 this very prestigious award once again for the boys' hard work within our communities.

Our Pack concentrates on 3 major principles that as Committee Chair I truly believe will help transform young men into strong citizens.  Faith, Citizenship and Family Values.  Our pack strongly encourages each boy to take part in our annual Faith Series for which only 3% of all cub scouts in the US take part in.  We also encourage our boys to take place in our many flag ceremonies including our annual Flag Retirement Ceremony along with our many awards that can be earned through citizenship series programs.  Finally we put a strong emphasis on Family Participation in everything we do!  It is these principles that build strong leaders and allow the boys to grow up to be good men and even better fathers to their sons and daughters.

Along with the service projects we of course do many other activities such as archery, snorkeling, BB guns, crafts, camping, sports, field trips, hiking, pinewood derbies, raingutter regatta derbies, canoeing, sleep-ins, etc.

Even with the strong and dedicated leaders that we have in place there is always something for parents to take part in to continue to grow this pack.  Here are some responsibilities of a parent:
  •     Provide help and support the den and pack.
  •     Work with your scout on advancement projects and activities.
  •     Attend pack meetings with your scout and present his advancement awards to him at the pack meeting.
  •     Attend and assist with den outings.
  •     Attend Cub Scout Family campouts with your scouts.
  •     Pay den dues on time each and every month.
  •     Take an active role on our Pack Committee.  This committee is responsible for all the activity planning and the day to day operations of our pack.  This committee meets the second friday of each month.
  •     Take part in monthly roundtables which are held on the first thursday of each month at St. Leo University.  Bring your scout and he will have the opportunity to earn belt loops and/or pins.

You are probably asking yourself, How does participation in Cub Scouting affect participation in other activities?  Great Question.

>The Cub Scout program is designed to compliment many other extracurricular activities.  Typical time commitment is two den meetings and one pack meeting per month.  Boys who participate in organized academic-based activities like music, art, science, etc can be recognized for these activities through cub scout belt loops and pins which are worn on the scouting belt.  I try to remind parents that scouting can be a lifetime commitment from the time your son enters first grade until he reaches adulthood and wants to become a leader .

What does Cub Scouting offer my scout?

Cub scouting offers fun and challenging activities that promote character development and physical fitness.  Service projects, ceremonies, games, and other activities guide boys through the core values and give them a sense of personal achievement.  Through positive peer group interaction and parental guidance, boys also learn honesty, bravery, and respect.
